Language Arts Learning Activity
In this unit, you will create a fictional ebook in which climate change is a major theme. As you know, climate change may have a dramatic effect on much of the world’s population. For this assignment, create a main character(s) and put them in a situation where climate change directly affects their life. What will they do to overcome this situation? What tools are available to them? Who can they go to for help? What can they do as an individual? What will require governmental leadership? To complete this assignment, you will need to write your story, locate photos or draw pictures, and share your ebook on a site called mixbook.
Write a story set at this point in our history. When you write your story, you must show me your knowledge about the causes of climate change as well as potential technologies, policies and community solutions that can ensure the next generation will have a world that is cleaner, safer and better managed than the one today.
Your story should include:
1. One or two main characters
2. A setting that puts the characters into a difficult situation caused by climate change.
3. A plot that has a beginning, middle and end and shows how the characters try to overcome a challenge presented by climate change.
4. Your knowledge of the causes and possible solutions of climate change. This needs to be based on scientific climate data and research on green energy technologies and policies. You can find more information here.
We will use process writing to complete this assignment.
1. Complete a K-W-L chart at home regarding your understanding of climate change and potential solutions.
2. Research your topic and complete the L part of the chart. Bring your chart to class and share in small groups. Feel free to add to your L column during your discussion.
3. Brainstorm ideas for your story. You can use lists, freewriting or mapping. Share these ideas with your group and offer suggestions to your partners.
4. Organize your story into 3 or 4 main plot developments. Share your ideas with your group.
5. At home, write your story. Email your story to me. I will return it with feedback.
6. Bring your draft to class and read your story to your group members. Receive and give feedback.
7. Use the in-class feedback and the feedback you get from me and write your final draft of your story.
8. Create your Mixbook and add pictures to your story.
9. Submit a link to your story on our class wiki under the ‘Climate Change Story’ page.
