Social Media: Mixed Reaction
When you see a movie, read a novel or a news paper or view a photograph, you have an emotional response to this media. For this activity, you will write a reaction essay about a photograph that you find on the internet. It is important to remember that you are not trying to convince others, but rather you should express how you feel and why you feel this way. This type of essay is useful when dealing with current events. I would like you to find a photo that explores a current social issue.
This activity will be completed entirely on-line. The tools below will help you. I will invite each of you to our Mixed Reaction group on each site. You will need to create a user ID for each site. Please include a photograph that will represent you on each of the pages.
For this activity, I have assigned each of you to a three person group. You will receive a card that represents your role in the group. There are three cards: The tornado, the quill and the red pen. On the back of each card are you duties.

Research: Over the next week, each of you must read about a current event happening somewhere in the world. You will collect the links to the information you have found on this event. Once you have your links please post them to Diigo, a site dedicated to social bookmarking. The sites that you find will be available to all members of our class.
Upload a Photo and Select One: Now that you have researched your topic, you will find a moving photograph based on your event. Please upload this photo to our flickr group. Once you have your photos uploaded, in your groups of three, you will need to agree on just one photo. Please look at all class member's photos. If you want to change the photo you uploaded, or add an additional photo, please do so. You can select any photo submitted by your classmates. I recommend finding a moving or provocative photo.
Collaborative Writing: It's time to write! Following the duties on you role card, you will work together to write a reaction essay about your photo. Each member of the group must complete their role and submit their work to the site Mixedinc.com. This site will allow you to collaborate on your writing. You will be able to watch how the essay is created from the pre-writing stage until the final draft is ready for submission.
Once the Red Pen has completed their duties, you must all agree on submitting the final draft. If you feel the essay needs to be revised again, offer suggestions to the Red Pen. The Red Pen must then make another revision. When you agree on a final draft, submit your essay. Then invite all the members of the class to read your submission. Read at least two groups submission and comment on their essay.
